Suits

  • People who rename batches of photos, scans or exports by hand
  • Beginners writing a first useful script

Result

Describe the folder, the naming rule and the safety checks so an AI assistant can write a script that previews every change and never overwrites a file.

Example outcome — the renaming rule in plain words, a dry-run preview table (old name → new name), the safety rules, and the command to run it on a test folder. This is an example plan, not a script that has been run.

Steps

  1. Copy a few real files into a test folder, and never point the first runs at the originals.
  2. Write the naming rule with three before-and-after examples, including an awkward one.
  3. Require a preview mode that lists every change and changes nothing.
  4. Add the safety rules: never overwrite, skip unreadable files, and write a log of what changed.
  5. Ask the assistant for the script, run the preview and check it, and only then run it for real on the test folder.

Checks

  • The preview lists every planned change and changes nothing.
  • No existing file is ever overwritten.
  • The script only touches the folder it was given.
  • A log records each old and new name.

Limits

  • Running the script is your decision and happens on your computer, not on this site.
  • Renaming cannot always be undone unless the script writes a log you can reverse.
  • This is planning guidance: it does not build, publish, send, or run anything.
Before you start
  • A computer where you are allowed to run scripts
  • A backup or copy of the files before any real run
Permissions
  • None. This template does not request filesystem, network, shell, secret, or account access.
