Suits

  • Developers who need one simple weather endpoint for their own app
  • Learners practising API design with a real data source

Result

Define the endpoints, the response format, the upstream data source and the error rules so an AI assistant can build a small, well-behaved API.

Example outcome — one or two endpoint definitions with example responses, the caching rule, the error responses, and where the upstream key is stored. This is an example plan, not a running service.

Steps

  1. Read the upstream source's terms, rate limits and attribution rules before writing anything.
  2. Define each endpoint: its path, inputs, one example response and its units.
  3. Choose a cache time, so repeated calls stay within the upstream limit.
  4. Write the error rules: unknown city, upstream unavailable, and too many requests.
  5. Ask the assistant for a first version, keep the upstream key in an environment variable, and test each error.

Checks

  • Every response states its units and the time the data was observed.
  • The upstream key never appears in code, logs or responses.
  • An unknown city returns a clear error, not a crash.
  • The upstream source is credited as its terms require.

Limits

  • Accuracy and availability depend on the upstream source; this plan cannot improve either.
  • Public access needs rate limiting and abuse protection beyond this first version.
  • This is planning guidance: it does not build, publish, send, or run anything.
Before you start
  • An account and key for the upstream data source, obtained by you under its terms
  • A place to run the service that supports secret environment variables
Permissions
  • None. This template does not request filesystem, network, shell, secret, or account access.
