Logo design brief

Write a clear logo brief — what the brand stands for, where the logo appears and what to avoid — before any design work.

Guidance only — opening a template runs nothing, saves nothing and grants no permission.

Suits

  • New small businesses, clubs or projects that need a first logo
  • People who want to compare logo ideas against the same brief

Result

Produce a one-page logo brief that an AI image tool or a designer can work from, with the constraints and review criteria written down.

Example outcome — a one-page brief with the brand summary, uses and sizes, style direction, things to avoid, required file formats and a review checklist. This is an example brief, not a finished logo.

Steps

  1. Summarise the brand in two sentences: what it offers and to whom.
  2. List every place the logo will appear, including the smallest size.
  3. Choose three words for the feeling, and list what to avoid, such as symbols common in your field.
  4. Write the deliverables: file formats, colour versions and a one-colour version.
  5. Use the brief to request several directions, then review each one against the checklist.

Checks

  • The logo is readable at the smallest listed size.
  • It works in one colour and on a dark background.
  • It avoids the symbols the brief listed.
  • The delivered files match the formats the brief asked for.

Limits

  • Trademark searches and registration are legal steps outside this template.
  • Rights in images made by AI tools can be unclear; read the tool's terms before commercial use.
  • This is planning guidance: it does not build, publish, send, or run anything.
Before you start
  • A confirmed brand name
  • A quick check that the name and any planned symbol are not already used by a similar business
Permissions
  • None. This template does not request filesystem, network, shell, secret, or account access.
