UI redesign brief

Write a redesign brief for one screen or flow: what is wrong today, who struggles, and how to tell the new design is better.

Suits

  • Product owners with a screen that confuses people
  • Developers who want design direction before rebuilding an interface

Result

Produce a focused redesign brief with the current problems, the people affected, the constraints and the success checks, ready for a designer or an AI assistant to propose a new layout.

Example outcome — a brief with the problem statement, the people affected, constraints, two or three design questions to explore, and checks for judging the new version. This is an example brief, not a finished design.

Steps

  1. Describe the current screen and the task people are trying to complete on it.
  2. List the observed problems, each with where the observation came from.
  3. Write the constraints: what must stay, and what may not be changed.
  4. Turn each problem into a question the redesign must answer.
  5. Share the brief, review proposals against the checks, and test the favourite with three people.

Checks

  • Every listed problem says where the observation came from.
  • The constraints are explicit, so proposals do not break them.
  • Success is defined by what people can do, not by taste.
  • The brief covers one screen or flow, not the whole product.

Limits

  • A brief cannot replace watching real people use the screen; mark any problem that is still a guess.
  • Accessibility needs its own check against a recognised guideline.
  • This is planning guidance: it does not build, publish, send, or run anything.
Before you start
  • Screenshots of the current design with private data removed
  • At least a few real observations of people using the screen
